The new album and the cover of LANDMARK by Max Würden, out on A STRANGELY ISOLATED PLACE are inspired by a series of paintings LANDMARK by Max. The original paintings featured in the artwork are from the 1960s and 1970s, which Max sourced over the past two years from thrift- and antique stores in the Cologne, Germany area.
“First I smoothed the surface of each painting, stripping the three-dimensional character of every oil painting until the paintings appeared to be printed. Printed like the maps in which triangles are used as symbols for landmarks. Then I placed a black triangle in it to cover the actual landmark displayed in each picture. No longer recognizable landmarks in destroyed environments.”
The black triangles were painted with the darkest flat, matt, black paint on the planet, creating a „nothingness“ on each image. The paint reflects hardly any light. The black triangles allow a new dimension to emerge.
Landmarks are an object or feature of a landscape or a town that are easily recognized from a distance and enables the viewer to identify their location. In nautical charts, they were indicated by black triangles and to this day, triangles are still used by land surveyors (Triangulation).
